"The Blue Pilgrim has arrived at Tantalus," Field Commander Welling said to me. "She's gunning for you, Mabon. Be very careful."
It's bad enough I've had to suffer through the destruction of Earth and the loss of my family, but now my clone is trying to kill me. It's like some bad Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. "How good is she?"
"Our reports say she's better than you. Took out Fault Lever on her own yesterday. I remember that one kicked your ass. Between the blade and the dual pistols she's practically unbeatable at close range, and she gets critical hits like nobody's business. Keep your distance and take out her spotter first. That will put her on the defensive. She's reckless when she's frustrated."
"Yeah, I want her defensive," I said sarcastically. Nothing more dangerous than a cornered animal. "She'll call in fire support on me. What do they call that? Fratricide?"
"If it's any consolation, you're a better shot with a rifle than she is." Welling shrugged at me. "Maybe she just wants to talk. She didn't kill Teanae or Matrona."
"No, she recruited Matrona. Now she wants to kill me, too. She's pissed that I didn't tell her about Caeruleum. Tea wasn't happy with me, either. Said I should have met Caeruleum in person at boot camp and none of this would be happening."
"War is hell, Deo."
"You should write that one down."
"If you don't survive, we'll bury you with honors."
"Your concern is touching."
"By the way, Deo, she went against Penumbra at Magma Caverns." Welling didn't say anything else. He didn't have to.
Damn it, Caeruleum.
